Sparkling lights, shop windows full of magic, fir trees by the thousands and unique moments to savour; Paris in December assumes a festive air that is simply unparalleled. In your room at the Hotel Opéra Lafayette you are just a step away from the enchanted world of Christmas that is waiting for you.
Celestial blue, red, gold and green, the Parisian sky is aflame with thousands of stars. The city’s illuminations came to sparkling life throughout the capital at the end of November. The Champs-Elysées is festooned with a stellar ensemble of gorgeous lighting that brings a totally dazzling ambience to further enhance the glamorous image of the most beautiful avenue in the world. Follow the lights for a walk through Paris. You will discover that many other districts have also hoisted their seasonal colours to provide an original setting for the arrival of Santa Claus. Visit Les Halles, which boasts a giant tree wreathed in a gown of light. Or the ‘magic garden’ of the Bercy Christmas village, with its luminous and poetic landscape. And don’t forget to take a stroll to the Parisian department stores to enjoy sights that will delight you.
There are not only illuminations in the streets. The department stores also like to adorn themselves with colours and lights. Before you step inside your attention will be seized by the display windows and their heart-melting beauty. The Printemps Haussmann department store sought out the Eisner award-winning artist Peter Diamond to design its Christmas window displays. The BHV Marais windows feature Santa Claus relaxing on his holiday in the mountains and chilling out with his elves. The Galeries Lafayette windows offer the luminous spectacle of an Arctic Christmas with polar landscapes to immerse you in an ethereal atmosphere with a subtle hint of environmental concerns.
Once inside the stores the magic continues with seasonal interior designs to take your breath away. Printemps has prepared fir trees, artful installations, garlands and light decorations of all kinds so that you’ll feel as if you are Christmas shopping in an enchanted kingdom. The Galeries Lafayette have also pulled out all the stops. Under the Art Deco dome you will find an extraordinary giant tree. The golden decor highlights this majestic and totally white tree that you can see as you progress from floor to floor. This was created entirely out of paper by Lorenzo Papace, and is accompanied by a Ferris wheel, cable cars and polar bears in harmonious white, which contrast delightfully with the store’s gilt. Topped with a huge golden star illuminated from the inside, this colossal tree will be one of the most amazing aspects of Christmas 2016. Do your shopping amidst the spectral whiteness of the North Pole! Once again this year, the City of Light lives up to its name!
